Visitors to drupa could not fail to recognise Heidelberg’s clear determination to intensify their activities and commitment to the packaging industry. This assurance cannot have been more apparent than in Hall 2 which was dedicated to packaging print solutions and special applications. We showcased from carton design to pre-press, printing, die cutting and carton gluing as well as HEI Lighting UV, coating, embossing and security printing. Visitors could see for the first time our Prinect packaging print workflow, a unique system which impressed everyone who saw it. Able to integrate and optimise the carton manufacturers work flow, from management to production and from prepress to finishing, the software improves process transparency, enhances performance and maximises profit margins. Also on show was Prinect Package Designer, a new CAD/CAM system offering unequaled simplicity for packaging design and creation of cutting forms and related tools.
The integrated packaging production demonstration drew large appreciative crowds. Machine presentations showed the Speedmaster XL 105-6 with logistics running at 18,000 sheets/hour and alongside the Dymatrix 106 Pro running at 9,000 sheets/hour. Simultaneously the new Diana 115X carton folder gluer ran with the Diana Packer automatically loading the glued cartons at over 200,000 cartons/hour. With all three machines performing at maximum speed it was an awe-inspiring sight. High production speeds were matched by impressively short job change over times. Improvements have reduced set up time on the Dymatrix by 25% and visitors were astonished to see a job change in just 7 minutes which included the cutting, stripping and blanking tools.
The innovative new Diana X 115 carton folder gluer was no less impressive. With automatic change over and new developments allowing the folder gluer operator to remain on one side during set up. A live job change from straight line to a 6 corner gluing took just 12 minutes… a real eye opener, especially when the 6 corner job was then seen running at 42,000 cartons/hour.
For those with modest budgets the new Varimatrix 105CS die cutter and the Easygluer 100 attracted huge interest from carton manufacturers, trade houses and those commercial printers looking to replace cylinder die cutters or just bring die cutting and gluing in house. The Varimatrix 105CS offers quality die cutting and stripping and along with a new look. There were many improvements like servo drive for the feed table and pneumatic chase locking which both help reduce downtime and increase productivity.
The Easygluer100 is all about adaptability, with a high standard equipment level to allow straight line and crash lock cartons to be glued. Optional equipment like back fold hooks allow 4 and 6 corner collapsible boxes to be glued. Also, unique to folder gluers at this price level is the optional blank aligning station, fitted after the feeder it permits the more problematic cartons to be run with ease.
Visitors from the packaging industry were quick to appreciate that only Heidelberg could offer their sector the complete package.
