Speedmaster XL 105 from Heidelberg Sets New Standards

  • 2,500 printing units already supplied worldwide
  • 100th press soon to be installed in Germany
  • Peak performance press in the pressroom
The Speedmaster XL 105 in the 70 x 100 cm format  was unveiled at drupa 2004 with series production beginning in April 2005. The “XL” became a big seller worldwide - the 2,500th printing unit is now part of a UV press operating in England. The 100th press was recently sold in Germany which accounts for around twenty percent of all Speedmaster XL 105 units have been installed. The Speedmaster XL 105 also won the prestigious PIA/GATF InterTech Technology Award.

The peak performance press is targeted at industrialised print shops in the commercial, packaging and label sectors that value its high level of automation and efficient operation. Customer surveys reveal that the Speedmaster XL 105 can raise productivity by between 30 and 40 percent. This is due in almost equal measure to savings in make-ready time and faster average speed per job. Colour remains stable even at speeds of 18,000 sheets per hour. Heidelberg supplied the 1,000th printing unit in this series just one year after starting series production.
English print shop Benson Box is the proud owner of a Speedmaster XL 105 UV containing the 2,500th printing unit. Mark Kerridge and Andrew Benson celebrated the milestone with Markus Höfer and James Todd from Heidelberg (from left to right).
Print Shop in England values high productivity and environmental compatibility
Mark Kerridge, Managing Director of the Benson Box print shop in England, expects the Speedmaster XL 105 six-color UV press with coating unit to double the capacity produced by the previous press. The 2,500th printing unit is installed in his Speedmaster XL 105. The print shop manufactures folding cartons for food, destined primarily for the refrigeration shelves of major supermarket chains. The company - one of the biggest independent folding carton print shops in England - was founded 87 years ago and employs a workforce of 223. "We are very happy with our decision to opt for the Speedmaster XL 105 UV," confirms Mark Kerridge. He continues: "The print quality is excellent and we have a constant production rate of 18,000 sheets an hour. The press is easy to operate via the Prinect CP2000 Center." Environmental aspects also played a key role in the purchasing decision. At present, Benson Box's production processes use 0.2 percent alcohol, and the company is striving to cut this figure to zero.
Hedwig Wahle from Druckerei Rihn ordered a Speedmaster XL 105 at the Heidelberg Open House event in Hanover and receives the 100th press of its kind to be sold in Germany.
Druckerei Rihn in Blomberg soon to install the 100th press in Germany
A Speedmaster XL 105 five-color press with coating unit is being sent directly from the Heidelberg Open House event in Hanover to Druckerei Rihn GmbH. This means that the 100th press in Germany is to be installed in Blomberg. The full-service print shop with 25 employees is currently running to full capacity in three-shift operation. "We expect the XL to increase productivity and cut make-ready times," explains Andreas Wallbaum, Managing Partner at Druckerei Rihn. "As a specialised commercial print shop, we want to provide our customers with finished printed products of an even higher quality," continues Wallbaum. A new hall is being built at Druckerei Rihn to house the Speedmaster XL 105.

Peak performance in the pressroom
The Speedmaster XL 105 is a completely new platform development from Heidelberg. It supports between four and ten colors and an optional coating unit. Since mid-2007 it is also available as a UV version and a dual-coating press. As a result, the benefits of this series are available for a highly varied range of finishes.

UV printing enables premium gloss effects, unusual printing stocks, such as laminated materials, films, or metallised surfaces, and fast postpress. Printers can expand their services to include other specialised products.

As a dual-coating press, the Speedmaster XL 105 is a good all-rounder. It can process conventional inks and give them a UV coating inline once a primer has been applied. A range of combinations are possible, such as primers with metallic coatings, Iriodin, or functional coatings.

The Australian and New Zealand printing industry has always been an early adopter of new technology in the search to gain a market edge.

When the XL105 was introduced into the market in 2005, it was only a matter of time before printers in Australia and New Zealand realised its advantages, now only two years after the first press arrived on our shores, there are 7 installed down-under.

In the last 12 months Heidelberg has introduced UV, double coaters and Duo models to complement the XL range and with Drupa only months away, look out for many more innovations in the wide format market.
