Ensure your future with technology - V W Print

When VW Print was taken over last year by a consortium of staff members the company was operating old equipment in a “tin shed” as Managing Director Cliff Dyer described the company’s old premises.

Since then they have moved to a new site in Napier on the North Island of New Zealand and revamped the company’s equipment in order to be “the most technologically advanced small print shop in our region.”

VW Print was originally a family business and will celebrate its centenary in 2008.  In order to stay relevant to the market and compete for general jobbing work Cliff says it was vital for VW print to upgrade its equipment.

“Those printers who are working out of their garage operating a GTO and still producing plates in the traditional manner have no future in my opinion.  Employing new technology is the only way to ensure your future.”

VW Print installed a Speedmaster (SM) 52-2 colour press and a computer to plate - Polysetter 52 six months ago.  The new equipment has delivered a 30 percent increase in turnover in that time.  Cliff believes he can ramp that up to 40 percent with the company’s new sales representative.  “This technology means that we can produce work faster and more cost effectively than before.  It also means we can compete with the digital guys on small runs and still be profitable.”

Cliff says the combination of the SM 52-2 and the Polysetter has streamlined production from front to back.  “We are now running twelve hour shifts six days a week and we’re still not at capacity.”

Regardless of the size of your business Cliff believes that printers today need to be “digital image manipulators.  You have to be able to service all the needs of your customers – print, internet, digital.  These are the platforms that are being used in the marketplace and you have to embrace them or give it up.”
