Market Application for the CD 74 |
 |
The CD 74 has had a profound impact on the A2 printing industry, not since the introduction of the Heidelberg GTO has a machine platform been so readily embraced by the Australasian printing industry.
Since its introduction into the marketplace in 2001 HAN has sold a CD 74 every 40 days with the press being installed into a wide range of market segments. Key factors to the machines success stem from a versatility of offerings as opposed to any one particular feature. These offerings have allowed the machine to be installed across a range of differing printing applications from short run ganged production through to specialty label and packaging production.
The CD 74 is the A2 benchmark press. Some of its regular achievements in high performance include:
- High impression counts. Over 40% of the installed base achieves in excess of 18 million
- Utilisation of over 20,000 plates per year
- More than 5,000 MRs per year

To further illustrate the broad applicability of the CD 74, consider the three main categories:
CD 74 as print partner to Large A1 presses Thriving in a high production environment, the CD 74 top speed of 18,000 sheets per hour (sph) allows maximum output, even on short run lengths. This coupled with quicker MRs, lower turn around times and flexibility to deliver on complex jobs are characteristics praised by printers.
CD 74 as A2 Commercial workhorse Ability to come to colour quickly using short train inking, flexibility of substrates and perfecting devices for short-run book work contributes significantly to an impressive growth in both revenue and margins.
CD 74 as specialty/packaging press Multiple substrates - ink - sealant/coating combinations can be produced, enhancing competitiveness through flexibility by reducing MR times, high quality output coupled with higher speed/productivity.
These statements are backed up though collection of production data and regular performance monitoring on machines in the Australasian marketplace. This service - exclusive to Heidelberg - allows customers to ensure the appropriate fit between press and daily demands.
In next month’s HAN Newsletter, we will discuss the results of extensive analysis in production benchmarking for the CD 74.
