The Competitive Edge - UV Coating II |
 |
In part two of our series on in-line special effects we will explore the specialised world of in-line sheetfed UV Printing.
UV Coating produces outstanding printed results yielding dynamic gloss effects using a variety of production methods.
UV Coating over Conventional Inks The goal of this application is to enhance the printed product by imparting high gloss and/or abrasion resistance to it. This boutique approach to adding value to the printed product is all about drawing the attention of a potential customer.
This method of coating has grown in popularity as more printers choose a faster in-line approach improve their productivity.
It requires the application of a primer between the UV coating and the inks to prevent the wet ink from reacting with the coating. To accomplish this, the primer has to be dried by an additional IR/hot air dryer between the two coating units.
UV Coating Printed over UV Inks UV inks significantly extend the range and applications that can be applied to print a better product. The use of UV inks is highly recommended when printing on non-absorbent substrates, such as plastic sheet and metallised paper and board.
A Melbourne printer is successfully using UV inks by printing coloured garden punnet tabs onto plastic. The tabs are used in the nursery and market garden industry to advertise plants from their pots and punnets.
Other uses include labels and wrappers, high-quality folding boxes, plastic cards, stickers, covers for high-end brochures and all other products that call for maximum gloss and resistance to scratching and abrasion
Heidelberg has a number of presses, including the Speedmaster 52, 74 and 102 size format, that are successfully printing in-line with UV coating and UV inks.
