Speedmaster SM52 Setting New Standards in Regional Australia

Details
‘The finest work at the fairest prices’ is the motto that has seen Thomson’s Printing of Albury, New South Wales, continue its growth from one generation to the next. This smart investment in equipment will enable the company to grow and along with the succession planning create a business success story.

Founded in 1967 by Barry Thomson, Thomson’s Printing has been run by Barry’s son Donald since Barry’s death in 2001.

Donald could claim to have ink in his veins, citing treasured family memories where he, as a baby, bounced happily in his bouncinette while watching his father run the presses. Such early exposure to the world of printing has been followed up with 22 years in the business.

Donald Thomson recently oversaw the growth of the company’s premises with an expansion program resulting in a huge 2000 square metre working area. In addition Thomson invested in a Heidelberg Speedmaster SM52 five colour press.

Thomson believes that the SM52-5 offers technology that will enable him to continue his father’s legacy of providing efficient service at a competitive price. It has also seen Thomson’s re-establish itself as a leading colour printer in and around the region.

“Having the extra printing deck has created a new market for us to promote our products, as we can now add a fifth special Pantone colour or seal the printed sheet with a varnish finish” said Donald Thomson. “In-line numbering and perforating has added to the overall flexibility and productivity of this veratile press”, he added.

“The SM 52-5 has enabled us to print on a wide range of stocks, from light carbonless sheets (0.04cm) right through to heavy card and packaging materials (0.6cm) without a problem! Make-ready times have also significantly decreased with the utilisation of the CP2000 console being interfaced to the Pre-Press department. Ink duct settings are automatically and quickly down-loaded and when you combine this with the Vario Dampening feature which eliminates “hickeys on-the-fly”, slow make-readies have become a thing of the past. Our printers love this feature,” said Thomson.

Thomson’s Printing was recently short listed as a finalist for the 2005 "Small Business Awards - Champion of Champions", sponsored by Westpac Business Bank.
