The Competitive Edge - Conventional Coating - I

With market pressures continuing to reduce the retail price of the printed product, as well as higher customer expectations on innovation, quality and delivery, now is the time to examine options that can give your company a Competitive Edge.

Whether it be brochures, business reports, CD-booklets or labels, coating the job is a way of increasing productivity and providing value to your customers.

There are various reasons for coating. In some instances printers use the fifth deck of a multi-colour press to seal the colour so they can quickly back-up and print the reverse side of the sheet. This keeps the presses moving and gets the job printed efficiently.

A more creative effect is running a dedicated coating system with water based coating in the deck. The effects achieved are highly marketable and give the customer added value that they can sell to their customer.

The advantages of this system are:

•  Even distribution of the coating effect
•  Attractive gloss results (75 to 80 gloss points)
•  Faster drying of the printed surface
•  Increased productivity by creating a faster turn around
•  No scent or fading

Many printers are already using coating and achieving good results, however many of them are printing offline which creates bottlenecks and productivity constraints which could mean the difference between winning or losing a quotation.
