Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG will be showcasing its new CutStar CAN sheeter at Ipex 2006 on a Speedmaster SM 102-12 P7. The Speedmaster CD 102 series and, for the very first time, the Speedmaster XL 105 and Speedmaster CD 74 series can also be configured with CutStar. The new CutStar features high automation, enhanced operation, and a larger maximum reel diameter of 1.5 meter (4.92 feet). With the current reel diameter of 1.3 meter (4.26 feet), this means up to 33 percent more paper on a reel. Another new feature is the CAN link - Controller Area Network - which enables formatting infor- mation to be transferred from the tried-and-tested Prinect CP2000 Center press control system to the CutStar. The sheeter is thus integrated in Heidelberg’s operating philosophy.
The benefits of web printing can be applied to sheetfed presses at speeds of up to 18,000 sheets per hour and for grammages from 40 gram per square meter up to 300 gram per square meter. The CutStar reduces printing stock costs by up to 20 percent depending on the country, as reel stock is significantly cheaper than sheeted stock. The variable cutoff length is used to adapt the paper to the particular print product so that no material is wasted. Overall, production costs fall as utilization levels of Speedmaster presses increase. In particular, commercial printers with long perfectors and label printers can therefore make real savings with the CutStar.

The new CutStar CAN will be available from the end of 2006, replacing the current CutStar, which was presented at drupa 2000 and has been a success worldwide with over 115 installations. Almost 80 percent of these sheeters are on long perfectors. For certain jobs with longer print runs, these configurations can also compete with web presses.
Ease of use, fast reel changes, and accurate sheet travel The CutStar CAN's new features are the brake design, conveyor belts, and the much larger paper buffer. This ensures greater reliability, excellent paper feed, ease of use, and faster paper reel changes. This process takes less than five minutes, the same time required for changing a format. Switching from reel to normal sheetfed mode is possible in just a few minutes.
The web is fed to the cutting unit via a paper buffer and an infeed roller and cut to the required format, anywhere between 40 centimeters (15.75 inches) and 75 centimeters (29.52 inches). Once the cutting process is finished, the sheet is guided to the shingling unit. Here, the rear edge of the sheet is lifted so that the following sheet can enter into the resulting gap. The stream of shingled stock produced in this way is then passed to the feeder.
First Speedmaster CD 74 with CutStar CAN produces in England Visitors to Ipex will have the chance to see the first CutStar installed on a Speedmaster CD 74 under real conditions. Browns CTP printshop in Oldham, England, has been using a Speedmaster CD 74-12+LX with CutStar, the longest press in this format. Complete with CutStar, it is nearly 27 meters long, thus beating the Speedmaster CD 74 with thirteen units at French print shop Alliora, the previous record holder at 21 meters. Browns CTP has a production staff of 30, producing mainly for the agency and direct mail markets. "The new press makes us much more competitive and we are looking to increase our sales by 30 to 40 percent", explains Managing Director Andrew Brown. "The CutStar enables us to reduce paper costs and waste sheets thus increasing throughput and profitability," adds Brown.
