Highly automated perfect binder combines professional results with very short make-ready times

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be showcasing its new Eurobind 4000 perfect binder at Ipex 2006. A prototype of this unit was unveiled at the company's Postpress Inforum in Leipzig back in the fall of 2004. The Eurobind 4000 is highly automated and produces up to 4,000 books an hour. The roller and nozzle systems for processing polyurethane or hot-melt adhesives are easy to change, providing maximum flexibility. This polyurethane technology allows straightforward and cost-effective production of high-quality brochures and books. The modular structure of the Eurobind 4000 means that it can be tailored to a customer’s exact requirements. Precise spine preparation and a consistently high level of glue application ensure a quality end product. The Eurobind 4000 can be integrated into the Prinect end-to-end workflow system. This means that job and presetting data can be routed directly to the press and recorded in a management information system for actual costing purposes.

With its short make-ready times, the Eurobind 4000 is ideal for cost-effective production of small and medium jobs involving frequent changes. It produces paperbacks, magazines, annual reports and image brochures with a block (end-to-end) height of 140-450 millimeters (5.51-17.72 inches) a block width of 100-320 millimeters (3.94-12.60 inches) and a block thickness of 2-60 millimeters (0.08-2.36 inches). The grammages for the cover are between 120 gram per square meter and 380 gram per square meter, while those for the content are between 60 gram per square meter and 135 gram per square meter. This makes the Eurobind 4000 suitable for industrial print shops and finishing specialists with an annual volume of around four million books and an average run size of 5,000 copies. The Eurobind 4000 will be available for delivery from the end of 2006.
The Eurobind 4000 is controlled by local touchscreen modules which are networked with each other. This allows functions like the cover feeder or the entire system to be operated from various locations.

Straight-forward operation and intelligent control
The Eurobind 4000 is controlled by local touchscreen modules which are networked with each other. This allows the individual units or the entire system to be operated from various locations.

The touchscreens benefit from the tried-and-tested Heidelberg user interface with its ergonomic design and self-explanatory icons that provide the operator with direct setup support. The Eurobind 4000 has an impressive, intelligent combination of man-ual and automated setting options, providing the ideal basis for short make-ready times. Control systems throughout the installation ensure finished products of a consistently high quality. The cooling section between the perfect binder and three-side trimmer can be adjusted to suit specific requirements. As an alternative to a standard cooling section (cooling tower and belts), a system is available that conveys the products at a slight angle and on the spine of the block. This ensures a space-saving con-figuration. Depending on the run size, users can choose between two different three-side trimmers - the Eurotrim 4000 for larger print runs or the Eurotrim 4000A for smaller run sizes with frequent changes of format.

The Eurobind 4000 is the top-of-the-range, complete system rounding off the Eurobind family from Heidelberg. Back at drupa 2004, Heidelberg introduced the Eurobind 500, a perfect binder for short and medium runs. Another member of the family, the Eurobind 1200 model, produces 1,200 books an hour.
