Diana X 115/135 combines modular design with maximum flexibility and productivity

For the first time, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be showcasing the newly developed generation of Diana X 115/135 folder gluers at Ipex 06. This universal machine has a working width of 115 centimeter (4.53 inch) or 135 centi-
meter (5.31 inch) and features an impressive modular system that can be adapted to customer requirements and produces a wide range of carton types. The unit boasts a new safety and automation concept and integrated gluing and quality control. It processes board for folding cartons with grammages ranging from 200 to 900 gsm and N, F, E and B flute corrugated board. Depending on the application, it can reach speeds of up to 650 meters (2132.5 feet) per minute. At these speeds it can process up to 200,000 cartons per hour.

The Diana X 135 is designed for packaging printers and postpress specialists. Four standard versions are available - the standard unit, an already versatile but compact machine, a universal model for all standard blanks, and a unit with a turning module for processing specialty cartons. The last version is of particular interest to users who wish to gain a competitive edge with innovative and unique cartons. The machines can also be retrofitted and converted by using add-on modules at a later time.

Details
A & R Carton in Kriftel near Frankfurt has been using a Diana X 135 with integrated turning module since the middle of last year. This packaging printer, specializing in high-quality confectionary and cosmetics cartons, uses this turning module to produce elaborate cartons. Some special cartons used to need two separate production steps but can now be produced in a single step with the rotary module. "As a result of the Diana X 135, we are able to offer our customers an improved level of service and more efficient production," enthuses Ralf Schmidt, plant manager at A & R Carton. "With this machine we have increased the output by 15 to 50 per cent - depending on the carton type", says Schmidt. Latest generation glue line inspection units and code-readers make sure that the production is safe and the quality maintained.

Ease of use and high reliability in production
The Diana X 115/135 was showcased at drupa 2004 as a prototype and since last year the series production model has been shown at countless events in the Postpress Inforum at the Heidelberg site in Mönchengladbach. This was a chance for prospective customers to find out about the range of innovations. User friendliness is a key focal point for Heidelberg developers. For example, a better access to facilitate operation and the intuitive touchscreen control enhance productivity. The Diana X 135 uses the tried-and-tested DIAlog electronics from the Diana Pro range, with some added options. There are three positioning systems: AUTOset, DIGIset, and MANUset, which are fully automatic, semi-automatic, and manual systems respectively. A remote-diagnosis modem establishes direct, rapid contact with the Heidelberg service center.

Add-on modules provide a considerable boost to productivity and flexibility. As well as the turning module, a lockbottom module is available for shorter make-ready, and it can also be used for an extended pre-fold. At the same time it can be used for a compact version, capable of running collapsible boxes. The addition of the multipurpose "150 Module" will further increase productivity with collapsible and special cartons. Up to four servo-motor driven rear-folding shafts can be fitted to the pre-breaker, lockbottom module, and 150 module, thereby enabling collapsible and special cartons to be processed.
